The spider beetle has long spindly legs and a constriction in the thorax, giving them a superficial resemblance to spiders. The spider beetle is said to have originated in Tasmania, but has now spread worldwide, particularly in the colder regions. Unable to survive above 28 degrees Celsius, it remains active down to 2 degrees. 3.5 to 4mm long, the beetle is a dull reddish color. The larvae eat almost any type of dry, stored food, as well as carpets and furs. In dwellings, the beetles live on food and other organic debris, frequently hiding between floorboards, and sometimes emerging in large numbers.
